Race to the Stones – Sat 9 Jul

From Lynn Donohue…

This 100k race follows the ancient Ridgeway track from the Chilterns in the East to Avebury stone circle in Wiltshire near Marlborough and Devizes. There are some options with a 50k, a 50k overnight camp then 50k or the non-stop 100k. This was a sequel to my 50 @50 challenge when in 2012 I completed the 50 mile Montane UTLD. Why not do 60 @ 60 in 2022 I thought in a moment of madness back in October? It was a boiling hot day setting off just after 8am and with only a little shade for about 2 miles at the start. Most is on rolling chalk downs and surprisingly very remote, exposed and much hillier than I thought it would be. The tracks were hard packed and tough under foot, many runners getting awful blisters and the heat reflecting back off the white chalky paths made it worse with many runners retiring. I made it to the stones at Avebury just as the sun was rising several hours after I had anticipated but I finished – never again and 70 @ 70 isn’t going to happen! I finished 588 out of 1346 starters in 20 hours and 8 minutes for the non-stop event.
