From Jane McCarthy…
Travelling to Scunthorpe when half the Club were preparing for the brilliant Ilkley Fell Race felt like a strange thing to be doing – it was unfortunate that I hadn’t connected the dots when I entered – but it was a perfect day for a road race, cool and no wind, and the North Lincs course is known for being fast and flat. I was the only Harrier that ran in either the 10K or the HM, but the event definitely didn’t lack atmosphere and was extremely well organised, well catered (toilets-wise!) and generally a pleasant experience. I wasn’t there for an eyeballs out, fast as I could sufferfest, and it is amazing how much more enjoyable road running can be this way. I stuck to a plan of a comfortable first half, and then pushing the pace over the last 6 miles, was pleased that my final mile was my fastest. An hour and a half drive is not ideal to get to a race, but all things considered, I would definitely recommend it, particularly as a PB potential course, or simply a pre-marathon workout.
